I'm living my dream everyday.
How would you like your final flashback to be? | Saturday, March 12, 2011 @ 8:19 AM
神様が日本を祝福
I've been following the earthquake reports from Japan closely and although my life has
not been affected by the disaster, I still feel somewhat affected and appalled by the images
that I've seen, which might not have fully highlighted the magnitude of damages inflicted on
Japan in such a short span of time. This tragedy will no doubt transform the lives of its
victims and their family members in many unimaginable ways.

One moment, people were struggling to keep their rice bowls. The very next moment,
they were scrambling for their lives and cowering under tables and shelters. In that moment,
whatever that they had invested their time, energy, sweat or even youth in ceased to be
of any importance. It really drives home the message that we are powerless and vulnerable
in His presence.

We tend to forget that all things man-made -buildings, infrastructures, houses, cars, roads,
and many more- are temporal. In this crazy world that we're living in, it is really easy to
forget our purpose here when we get too caught up in the paper chase or rat race. I, for one,
is as guilty as charged.

A recent reading for one of my journ units (War & Conflict) told the story of a pair of
father and daughter -Kabaga and Justine- who fell victims to the genocide war in Rwanda
over fifteen years ago. Rwanda is a small country located in central Africa. A British cameraman, Nick Huges captured a video of them being hauled up from the side of the road by merciless
death squads who went on a killing rampage in Gikondo, a district which housed many
Hutu extremists. This video which captured the final moments of their deaths made the
headlines of newspapers around the world and shook the international community.

Kabaga and Justine knew what was coming. According to the video footage and a
neighbour who witnessed the entire ruthless act from a nearby distance, Kabaga spent
the final minutes of his life praying.

"The father was asking forgiveness for those who were about to kill them."
I am ashamed to admit that if I were put in his shoes, I would have been praying to God to
spare me of an innocent death sentence. The reason being that I fear death more than I fear Him.
I really admire Christians with strong faith, especially those who are ready for the second
coming of Christ. Will I ever be ready to see Him? I have so many unfulfilled desires and so
much hope for the future. It seems like I'll never be ready to let go of all my worldly
possessions and achievements. More importantly, I can't imagine losing my loved ones...

Let this tragedy be a timely reminder for us to reevaluate our priorities and goals in life.
I don't want to die as one filled with regrets and remorse for all the things that I've done
- or failed to do.

May God's presence comfort the victims and their families, and fill them with hope
in this time of tragedy.
in this time of tragedy.
To everyone back home, I just wanna say that I love y'all.
P.S. I was wrong about ducking under tables or furniture should a sudden earthquake occur. You are most likely to get crushed if you do that. Here are some useful survival tips: http://youth.worldslastchance.com/survival-skills/earthquake.html
